Adele, a distinguished, elderly academic, has taken her own life. At the up-country farmhouse she had long shared with her husband Tim, he is joined after the memorial service by their daughter Rebecca, their son Jeff and their daughter-in-law Lily. Haunted by the potent and combative personality of the absent Adele, the four of them grieve, reminisce, and struggle to come to term with her violent act. A working through that paradoxically morphs into a poignant celebration of life.

DENNIS PORTER is a reformed academic, living in Amherst, Massachusetts, who a few years ago returned to his first love, theater. The author of books on European and U.S. literature and culture (The Pursuit of Crime (Yale), Haunted Journeys (Princeton), etc), he now devotes his writing life exclusively to works for the stage. In recent years his plays have received major awards and festival productions: The John Gassner Memorial Award, Boston (Rainbow with Strings, 1998); the Julie Harris Playwriting Competition, Los Angeles (All the Rest, 2001); the Dubuque One-Act Competition (Between Men, 2002); the Pittsburgh New Works Festival (Set Piece, 2004). Bragging Rights, was a finalist in the 2003 Tennessee Williams One-Act Contest in New Orleans and was read at the Last Frontier Conference, Valdez, in 2005. Another one-act, How Big’s a Badger, won first prize at the Civic Theatre in Spokane (2003) and at First Stage, Los Angeles (2005). Billie was a finalist in the 2003 Heideman Ten-Minute Play Contest, Louisville; and Found Object is to be produced at the Cleveland Public Theatre in 2007.

Recent full-length works include A Tiger in your Pooch, An American farce, and Americana, a psycho-political drama that explores the life and career of Lillian Hellman in the context of her times.
